People who believe there is a War On Christmas don’t realize that the whole ‘Happy Holidays’ thing came from corporate headquarters and not from ‘liberals’.
That’s where they should be aiming their artillery, but since Fox “news” is directing where they should fire, corporate headquarters will never be mentioned.
Evangelicals and other rank and file Republicans will never understand how much they are held in contempt by Republican elite. They can’t even figure out where the recent anti-Trump campaign is coming from.
Hint: Look at the recent work of right wing cartoonists.
Just a “hysterical” fact. The rapture was on Nov. 13, 1977. One Ida Mae Hopplestronger of Des Moines was the only North American taken up. The rest of us were all not worthy.
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. This has about as much religious significance as Hanukkah does. Easter is the Christian holiday, all others are window dressing.ps Hanukkah(festival of lights) is a celebration of a miracle where a lamp with 1 days worth of fuel burned for a week – nothing to do with Jewish beliefs.
thebird55I have yet to find any concordance to any translation of the Bible containing the word “rapture”. Indeed, both Amos and Jesus describe the end of time as an unpredictable event that you won’t like. Some rapture!
Christmas begins in November, if not earlier, and ends by noon on Dec. 25th. The Christmas songs on the radio end, and the “after-Christmas” sales begin and the decorations come down. I guess once the opportunity for selling stuff to desperate gift buyers ends, Christmas is over.
But I was in Mexico over New Years a few years ago and they were still playing Christmas music in the stores — evidently there they pay attention to the “12 days of Christmas,” like they’re celebrating something more than commercialism.
GiantShetlandPony: you beat me to that one, but while the government recognizes 9 official holidays, my pocket calendar lists 43, including Boxing Day (all you Brits, and my daughter in New Zealand). Which is why saying “happy holidays” especially around Christmas/solstice with so many different ones close together, makes perfect sense, as bein NON-selective and therefore non-prejudicial. Just a thought.
Scratchy, the only nativity I saw in the news that was ordered removed was the Zombie Nativity in Cincinnati, Ohio. The people who put up the display were Christians that thought it would be fun.
Other than that there are some housing associations that have strict rules on displays of any sort, so perhaps that had more to do with the obscure reference of religious persecution that you refer? Which by the way, was the city council’s reason for ordering the zombie nativity removed also. Who knows, either way, what we do know, is some people have no sense of humor, but it’s not a religiously exclusive thing.
Now that would be worth writing down.It would be good to know that the flooding created by cold seas would be followed by warming due to inland aridity.But then you would have to remind people that none come to inland reservoirs except by the Sun, and that might prove controversial.
