We once called in an engineer to fix a faulty computer. He said that there was a problem with the AMD.“What’s an AMD?”“It’s an Air Moving Device.”“You mean a fan?”“Yes, but we call it an AMD for short.”

“Seeing as how the VP is such a VIP, shouldn’t we put the PC on the QT? ‘Cause if it leaks into the VC, he could end up MIA, then we’d all be put out on KP.” – Robin Williams

Back in the 90’s, Sun Microsystems had an internal document that explained all of the acronyms that they used. One was TLA, which stood for Three Letter Acronym, so they had an acronym for their acronyms. Another one on the list was CYA (Cover Your A$$) – it’s presence on the list spoke volumes about their corporate culture.

I often say that living in DC is living in Alphabet City. The worse thing is people use all these obscure acronyms and then get mad when you don’t know what they mean.
Kaputnik over 8 years ago
Sometimes at work we’ll have a short conversation consisting mostly of acronyms, associated jargon, and IP addresses. We’ll have a moment where we realize what this would sound like to someone else, and burst out laughing.
