If fanged terror understands the code, which is even difficult to read, and knows the answer, I’ll be pretty impressed.

How will they explain to his parents that he was trying to cheat by walkie-talkie-ing his stuffed tiger?

Seems like Hobbes is generally smarter than Calvin anyway. Although in Common Core, the answer would probably be “Jupiter”. Miss Wormwood is lucky the strip is from a more sensible era.

Good old “Pig Latin” that my sisters used to talk, so I wouldn’t understand what they were talking about. Very simple actually. Just remove the first letter of each word, & say it at the end, with an “a” attached, which actually pronounced “ay” Pig Latin then becomes Ig-pa(y), Atin-La(y).

Alvin-Cay Nd-Ay Obbes-Hay! Some words have to be tweaked using Pig Latin, but great to use by parents around kids, If they don’t want them to know what they are talking about. Years ago, I think that the Army used a made up language during combat simulations, so that it imitated soldiers fighting or being captured by the “enemy”, had to deal with someone not speaking English.

I think this is Miss Wormwood’s last physical appearance in the strip. I think there’s at least one more where we hear her voice, but this is the last time she appears “on camera”.

Just Googled it. “Esperanto” is the easy to learn artificial language used by the US Army—not sure who developed it.

I believe the Army used Apaches to codetalk during WWII. Whatever language he uses, Calvin is still the ignorant little resistor of knowledge except when his grade is at stake. Like a lot of six-year- olds.

If he’s such a boy genius – and the truth is, he is – how come he has to cheat on tests?

Actually, calculators were supposed to elimiinate all the memorizing of arithmetic, thus freeing up students to concentrate on really important math like algebra and calculus. In fact, now young adults can’t even add single digit integers without a calculator (they don’t know what addition is), and often not even WITH a calculator.

Some boy genius. You would think a genius would be smart enough to be more discreet, and if you’re struggling in basic math, wait until you get to algebra.

Oh and the answer is 2.

I don’t know about parents talking pig latin in front of the kids; my little brother and I spoke pig latin in front of our parents and quickly. They couldn’t process it fast enough to keep up. We also learned how to communicate by spelling very fast without pausing between words – again, minimal comprehension. And frustrated parents. Until we got told to stop or else.

I think she’s taking the walkie-talkie only so he’ll stop distracting the other test takers. No way does he have a contact with better math skills than his own.BTW, Hobbes once said that Calvin got a D in math. The only way I can see him getting that much is if Miss Wormwood grades on a curve.

Ironic that even after the “windtalkers” had demonstrated the value of their languages, white society continued to suppress first nations cultures with residential schools.

I figured out the code. All Calvin did was put the first letter of the word last and add “ay”. He’s saying, “Six minus four, hurry!”
