I don’t know about that… I haven’t seen that piece of paper in a few years, but, from what I remember, all it said was the name of the University, the degree and the date. Nothing about how I know what I’m doing…

“I have a Master’s degree…. in SCIENCE!!”

In the sciences, a Master’s is usually a sign that you weren’t good enough to get a PhD, or able to get a job with a Bachelor’s.

You may know, we don’t.

Many a business has a headstone that reads, “I have an MBA. Of course I know how to run the company!”

I’ll see your Master’s degree and raise you three Doctorates.

…so you are good at jumping through hoops and acting superior to others.

I worked for a med school research department. A master’s degree was given to anyone who completed the graduate student course work, passed their prelims, but didn’t go on to write a thesis, do the research for it, failed their thesis defense, or whatever else stifled their progress. A consequence of this was that a med school master’s did not get you the traction that an engineering or computer science master’s would in industry. It was looked down upon as a participation ribbon that said, “well, at least you tried.”

If you get enough of them in one cemetery, you have a consensus.

I’ve found that most people who scoff at anyone with advanced education…….never got much past High School.

Mines an MBA by the way, but I stuck with being an engineer :)

Teachers almost have to get a masters. You have to keep going to school or you don’t get raises in pay… As long as you have to take classes anyway, you might as well just go ahead and get a masters…

I’ll see your fancy degrees and raise you a life of practical, hands-on experience.

Both of my brothers have several advanced degrees and are putting them to good use in their fields. They also value education for the sake of learning more than for its supposed earning power (although they both went into very demanding professional fields.) But for those who go to college only for its earning power (and in many cases to put off maturing past puberty-based behavior), I can only say what novice con man Johnny Hooker said to his supposed mentor, Henry Gondorff, finding him hung over in a bathtub: Luther said you could teach me. I already know how to drink.

Pseudo-Sophists hurling invective here, each trying to out-disprove the other. It’s been my experience that growing up poor, intellectually curious and being bullied by the ‘stupes’ (who stayed home, got a union job and enjoyed a life of wine, Roses, ‘Jeannies,’ ‘Lindas’ and the occasional ‘Nancy’ before the wife found out about them) that it was far easier to take my curiosities to other schools, both military and night studies and here I am, retired, debt-free, a few bucks in the bank and our headstone already bought and paid for, just lacking the last four numbers for me. My advice was/is to the kids, grand-nieces and nefews is to find your passion, follow it and you’ll never have to ‘get a job’ wherever you travel. There’s too few artisans, craftsmen and just plain out and out sorts that made America for what it is and we’re just sinking into the ….. Oh, hell……forget it.

But his degree did support one “shovel ready” job!!

Given what’s being taught in college now amid an atmosphere of intolerance, it’s probably a better use of money to just buy a fake degree online…at least one of THOSE might be worth the paper they’re printed on.

Experience still provides the most enduring education with the highest values, though the graduation rate is ultimately zero.

Education is about learning more about things. Higher education is just about learning even more. That’s all. If it helps you get a better job, so be it…The main reason to learn more, (get an advanced education), is to know more. It feels good to know more. A feeling that is worth the money….What’s wrong with learning more?
