Vowels are not freeloaders—you have to pay for them. Just ask Vanna.

My linguistic pet peeve is silent letters! I think they should be either pronounced or dropped from use. Think of the word “doubt”; it should either be spelled “dout”, or the “B” should be pronounced. I know you’re trying it out right now, so tell me what you think. Or p-neumonia; why waste the time and ink (or electrons or whatever) to say or write or store something that is of no use whatsoever? My wife mentioned vowels as silent, and I agree to a point, but vowels serve a different purpose. Try “plum-bing”; doesn’t it just feel right? Hi, what do you do? I’m a plum-ber.
