My money is on the bird pecking the fat little darling, before the kid crushes it in his pudgy paw !

Reminds me of that Monty Python sketch where they were pulling the heads off (plastic) birds etc.

That goldfinch has ceased to be! It is an ex-goldfinch! It has shuffled off this mortal coil and joined the choir invisible!

Because no other way would it just submit to be held like that long enough to do a painting.

Click-to-enlarge image can be found here or here. Smaller enlargement can be found at Mr. Melcher’s blog entry.Portrait of Giovanni de’ Medici as a Child (link shows his Wikipedia page) is shown, with a different coloration thumbnail image, by its current-location page. That also has 2 colorations (foto #1 | #2), that can be interactively enlarged (without the watermark) by clicking the [Visualizza in grande formato] below the watermarked image. The Google translation looses those. It is described here, along with a different coloration, click-to-enlarge image. Another different coloration, click-to-enlarge image can be found here; but many different coloration or detail images are available online. You can also see a portrait of him and his mother at the current-location. Perhaps his father had to sell his clothes to pay for her dress. As @orinoco womble and @Pacopuddy mentioned, the bird is a goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (more under Subcategories).Second, of the 5 works, by this artist, that have, so far, appeared in Mr. Melcher’s blog, to also appear here.

I really like her dress for my own SCA personna (an English lady at Emperor Frederick’s court – daughter of his goldsmith) and I reallize that some infants are raised to be gentle enough to treat a small bird gently (I remember one little girl younger than that who petted Cuddles – and she allowed it, so the bird also understood). But as this was a Medici boy . . . I rather doubt it.

Oh, just to answer someone’s question, it’s one of Eleanor of Toledo and Cosimo de Medici’s children. Don’t remember which one off hand. We can all hope he was the one who died in childhood.
