Tired of art snobs and their stuffy old museums? So was Steve Melcher, so he created That Is Priceless -- dedicated to taking art’s greatest masterpieces down a peg with irreverent new titles. You don’t have to be an art lover to appreciate Steve’s sticking it to the man on a regular basis – especially when that man is someone like Caravaggio, who when you look a little closer, was really kind of a jerk.

Reminds me of that Monty Python sketch where they were pulling the heads off (plastic) birds etc.

That goldfinch has ceased to be! It is an ex-goldfinch! It has shuffled off this mortal coil and joined the choir invisible!
Because no other way would it just submit to be held like that long enough to do a painting.

Goldfinch – feathery on the outside, chewy on the inside!

Just a genuine query (sorry about this, people). Is this picture supposed to be the Christ Child? Wasn’t the goldfinch a symbol of Christianity for some unknown reason (to me at least).
I would be grateful if someone could help me out here – thanks in advance.

@Pacopuddy
Thank you, Pacopuddy. I have seen it in Holy Family paintings and never really stopped to wonder why. I quote from a page called “Animals matter to God”: *A post-biblical legend developed about the goldfinch being a witness to the humiliating march of Jesus carrying the cross to Golgotha. A goldfinch flew above the staggering figure of Jesus and was distressed by the crown of thorns on his head. As the legend tells it, the goldfinch flew down and tried to pluck off the thorns. As the bird plucked at thorns some of Jesus’ blood dripped onto the goldfinch’s head. Hence the origin of the red feathers on its head is explained as originating from this event.
Its natural diet of consuming thorns and thistles is also enlisted in the details of the tale, to emphasise that in the tragedy of Jesus’ torture and execution that even animals bore witness.*
