My mother took the blame for my difficulty in staying trim. She said when I was a baby, she put me on a formula of 2 parts water and 1 part of evaporated milk. Actually, she said the formula was supposed to be 3 parts water and 1 part of evaporated milk. So, she said my body got programed gain weight. Whether that was true or not I did enjoy s big breakfast, and two cups of coffee with 2 spoons of sugar and like many others, was told to clean my plate, which I did without any problem.
My mother taught me to clean my plate, and everyone else’s — I had to do the dishes! (Rim shot, please.)
Then there was the prim and proper woman who complained to her astonished friend that she was gaining weight due to sin: “You know, it’s a sin to waste food, so when the kids leave it over, I eat it.”
Yep, my mom was from a place and of a generation which — probably correctly — delighted in fat babies: because in such places and for those generations, the important thing was get your baby through next winter alive. And I think that not too long ago we learned that when baby gets lots of fat cells, those cells will be hollerin’ for food, lots of it — for the rest of kiddo’s life.

Everything in Roz’s kitchen is an accessory in search of fat!

From Allan Sherman:
My mother said to me,
“Clean the plate, because children are starving in Europe”…
So I would clean the plate, four, five, six times a day,
Because somehow I felt that that would keep the children from starving in Europe
But I was wrong They kept starving and I got fat.

Accessory? After the Fat?
How about … “Inspiration for” or “Instigator of the Fat”?

It should be, “Accessory before the fat,” but I suppose that doesn’t really make the joke work, does it?

No, you fat bird you did it all on your own. That’s the trouble with Americans they never want to take responsibility for their own actions.

Every once in a while, Roz gives a good zinger to the boys. Cosmo sure walked into that one!

Did she fail to teach you to take what you need instead of trying to eat it all?

That is so true!!! I’ve often wondered how people would fare if they never went on diets and started the yo-yo mechanism…

My Mom used to labor to get some weight on me when I was young and skinny. Then I moved away and started packing it on…!
