A second cartoonist who doesn’t understand the use of canaries in coal mines — that bird died 30 years ago and nobody paid any attention. What killed the coal industry was that people wanted to breathe unpolluted air so they switched to clearn energy sources. (The “Free Market” all those rightwingers claim they want.) And considering the mine owners continue to kill their employees and cover up the safety violations, they’re still living in the 19th century along with Airial and the other stooges.

Ironically, coal may be a good source for quantum dots which can can be used to make low cost (compared to silicon) PV cells. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24309588http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsami.5b01419

    More destruction, as promised.

    No surprises here.

For a bunch of people who call climate scientists alarmists who squawk like Chicken Little, “conservatives” seem squawk frantically yelling that the sky is falling every time Obama so much as blinks. Which reminds me….. When is Obama going to take everyone’s guns away as predicted when he got elected? He’s running out of time.

Yes, it’ll be bad for the people who make child-sized coffins too. Coal mining is on its way out, and it’s not because of Obama. It’s because other, less-polluting sources of energy have become so much cheaper, and coal mining has become highly automated and produces very few jobs.

BTW: while parts of the rules re-emphasize what’s already in law, and regulations, they don’t actually kick in until 2022, intending to reduce pollution from these sources roughly 17%, but 2030! Another case of still too little, too late. (Check out Scientific American articles, instead of Faux Noise.)

Doesn’t appear that Ariail gave this cartoon much thought before he drew it. Too little consideration of the fossil fuel industry changes in the last 25 years.

If it’s still available o line, check out the Columbus Dispatch series from several year ago detailing how AEP bought out the town of Chesapeake due to pollution from its nearby coal-fired power plant.
