Peppermint gets a lot of abuse here and she can be overbearing at times. But she is a sad character. Great athlete but not too bright, not too attractive. Then again, who, among the humans, is happy? Lucy, crabby, Linus, insecure, Schroeder, obsessed, Chuck, well Charlie Brown is Charlie Brown. Only Snoopy seems happy. And Marcie, who becomes a regular with this story arc.
Unfortunately for Peppermint Patty, Chuck is clueless when it comes to girls. He can’t see what is around him. In that way he was like me. My wife practically had to beat me over the head to get my attention.
I admit to shedding a few tears when seeing a rival and thinking, how can I compete with that? I wasn’t blonde or svelte which seem the requirements at the time. (brains weren’t included)
I married a kind of real life Peppermint Patty and couldn’t be happier. Out of all the Peanuts characters, Patty has the tenderest heart, and you can really see it in this arc.
