Ramirez shows either abject ignorance of foreign policy, intentionally dishonest distortion (gaslighting) or both, in trying to compare the recent arms deal coupled with a mutual defense treaty against a common enemy (Iran) masquerading as a peace deal (how can you have a peace deal among nations that HAVE NEVER BEEN AT WAR?), with an actual seven-nation peace accord with real teeth in it that was working and successful?
Trump got an amazing! (not!) “peace” accord among three nations that were not at war. It was basically an arms sales deal against a common enemy (Iran) which actually does more to foster tensions in the Middle East and INCREASE the chance of hostilties.
In constrat, Obama negotiated an excellent seven-nation (U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Russia, China and, of course, Iran) multi-lateral treaty that had succeeded in preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. It included unprecedented tools of verification and enforcement.
Trump’s own top intelligence and security advisors — his own appointees, all of whom had opposed the Obama success at the time it was achieved — had confirmed that it was working, Iran was in compliance and, despite their previous opposition, recommended against the disruption of ending it.
Trump, in his typical bull-in-the-china-shop tantrum style of “governing” by chaos, broke off the agreement, alienated our allies, created unnecessary tension with our adversaries and has now brought us to the point where we are teetering on the brink of war.
Iran was a problem.
Obama fixed it. Trump broke it, and is now selling arms in deals that only increase tensions.
the extinct dodo bird is the perfect editorial to show what we have.
Why is the Iran Nuclear Deal a dodo?
Every once in awhile Mike puts up a good toon. Today is definitely not one of those days.
Regardless of one’s feelings, the Iran nuclear deal was working according to the Western signatories, who were monitoring compliance). A peace treaty between hostile nations, even though they never fought each other, is good but additional work is needed to forge a comprehensive one between Israel and the Palestinians.
The “Abraham” Accords?
The way Trump has been talking about them, I thought they were the “Donald” Accords.
Hard to do on a bird, but it looks to me as if Ramirez has managed to portray that “dove” as having a sneer.
Perhaps the Iran Deal is more “ugly” (or whatever point Ramirez is trying to make here), but it was also more meaningful.
The Abraham Accords only made official the relations between Israel and Bahrain and the UAE. Neither Bahrain nor the UAE have ever been at war with Israel. They already had good unofficial relationships with Israel. De facto, these deals change little in the Middle East, other than strengthening the anti-Iran alliance between the US, Israel, and the Arab states.
The Iran Deal stopped in its track an Iranian Nuclear Program which was (if I remember correctly) months away from making a nuclear weapon, deprived Iran of the enriched Uranium, and made sure that we could make sure that Iran was not enriching Uranium for dangerous purposes. Trump left the deal in 2018, and lo and behold:
This isn’t the same as AN ACTUAL BOMB by year’s end, but that will come soon enough. And by this point, Iran has adapted so much as a result of previous sanctions that new sanctions will have little effect. In lieu of the US, it now trades with Russia and China.
But let’s remember what’s important here! THE ORANGE PARASITE was nominated for his coveted NOBEL PEACE PRIZE! /s )<:
One would be quite valuable today and the other is worthless…. You decide.
If Ramirez drew what he actually felt, the dodo would have the olive branch and the dove would have an automatic rifle.
Obama sold everyone out by handing billions of dollars over to the Iranian regime. Did anyone really think they would use the money for peaceful nuclear research?
^ Utterly amazing … President Obama negotiated this agreement with Iran without the involvement of any other major powers!
