Let me see if I get this straight: Mimi, after spending 20 years with Gil, suddenly decides she’s gay and divorces her husband and abandons her two kids (one of whom gets pregnant and has an abortion). And now she’s palling around with her ex, encouraging him to date. And everybody treats this as normal; nobody, not even Gil, is saying, “What the hell…?!”

The problem with ‘Gil Thorp’ is far beyond the author’s ignorance about sports: he just doesn’t understand how human beings work.

Several Snarkers speculated The Gilfather would go to Central City to visit Beth. Co-pilot Hilary won’t be making this flight. Now if that goober Jami was tagging along, Gil would find her useful since the little fart has a crush on her.

“Hey, I know – let’s make Gil an airplane mechanic!”

" Has he ever done that before?"

“Who knows? Eh, whatever – I’ve confused readers enough by now that they’ll just assume it’s accurate.”

P-1: Gil’s co-pilot literally walks into his life again.

P-2: He means a literal spin. He just adjusted Robin’s landing gear so that he goes in circles when he tries to taxi. Boys will be boys.

P-3: Forbidden knowledge, I may have to adjust her brakes.

P-4: Could you give her vibrator back? She left it when we were in Arizona visiting Mi… friends.

That looks mostly like a Comanche, but for the split windshield and 3-blade props (not sure what’s up with the rudder(s?)). You get one of those into a spin and you’re dead, Gil.

During BB season most coaches are too busy to travel for with his teaching duties .Nice to know with all his high power assistants Gil can fly away and still maintain his coach of the year status

Since The Gilfather is a free agent and the plane hasn’t been flown since the COTY awards, his cockpit could use a through dusting.

Hillary isn’t looking as glamorous as the last time we saw her. Are those overalls? She can’t compete with Beth looking like that. And speaking of competing, it’s hard to compete with Mopped Up Thorp and come out on top.

Hi all! I read the comments a day late, so I didn’t see yesterday’s comments until today and I wanted to chime in about some of the Friday posts. I’ve been reading Gil Thorp since mid-80s when I discovered it in the sports section of the Chicago Tribune. I agree with the general sentiment that the current version of this strip is unrecognizable and, quite frankly, has no connection to its past.

To Henry @henryjbarajas: I am asking this in all sincerity because I don’t understand: What would prompt you to take over a strip that had, as Charks mentioned, a defined cycle of high school sports that mirrored the real-world high school sports seasons and turn it into a soap opera about the coach and remove nearly all the sports? Why didn’t you just create your own brand-new strip focusing on a high school coach’s personal life? Did you actually read the strip and understand it before you took over? The strip is called “Gil Thorp” because he is the only permanent character; the high school students eventually graduate and no longer appear in the strip. There is a reason the Chicago Tribune put the strip in the SPORTS section. The sports stories from the past, even when snarked on, are generally based on universal sports team situations. (I have to say “generally” because when it comes to the nearly blind pitcher arc, I got nothing.) The much-maligned peacock arc was a story about how a team organically finds something innocuous to rally around, rides the emotional wave into the state playoffs, and eventually loses to a better team with their own rally mascot. The butterknife story was more generally about losing a player due to ineligibility (usually grades) and how that affects both the team and the player, both short-term and long-term (subsequent arcs). Do you understand any of this?

To the regulars: It’s been fun reading your comments over the years. Lately, it feels less fun. And no, I don’t believe readership is up.

What sucks is Gil will fly in to see Beth, show up at her bar, start hitting her up, then she’ll tell him, “Sorry, not interested Gramps. I flirt with all the older men for larger tips.”
