There is a lot of great cheese in the US. Processed cheese was all we got growing up after my dad died, because it was cheap, but ‘real’ cheese was always available.
American “cheese” is not, by definition, cheese. Here in Canada we refer to it as “processed cheese”. It is not even included in the extensive list of cheeses requested by John Cleese in the classic Monty Python cheese sketch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz1JWzyvv8A
