Why I moved to Buena Vista Virginia, population 6100. The traffic is so slow that you sometimes find dogs sleeping in the street. From behind the house:
1) The energy needed wouldn’t be a problem, you expend much more in gasoline as it is, but the sudden accelleration, enough to send you 20-30 km, the typical commute, would not be for the delicate.
2) Then, with the air full of ballistic commuters (plus drones, for those who chose to “telecommute”) there will be collisions and serious injuries, deaths. You need some way to steer, and some way to know when a collision is imminent and which way to steer to avoid it and all others.
3) Or body armor – maybe just a hard canister with cushioning? but assuming you survived a collision, wouldn’t you land far from where you intended?
4) Next, there’s this: in skydiving meets, somebody pops open their chute with another diver just above, who falls thru it and collapses it.

It’s a charming idea, but I have some questions.
