I know! It’s because the publisher who founded the paper launched it to crusade against corruption and said it was going to “hit this town like an avalanche!”
Ha! When I got back home I told people, “It’s like the middle of nowhere. There are actually tumbleweeds blowing down the streets!”
My favorite Lubbock fact is the daily newspaper is called the Avalanche-Journal. There isn’t a mountain within a thousand miles of the place (OK, a bit of an exaggeration, but still…).
I once went to Lubbock, Texas and experienced all four seasons in five days. Temps were in the 80s when I arrived, and snow was falling when I left. And everything else happened in between — sun, clouds, rain, wind, hail, you name it.
