god is a belief. but, organized religion ruins it. religion ruins it by having crazy rules more than blockbuster on everything. what to eat, love, pray, clothing, etc…that and all those “spiritual” leaders on power trips. and, the bible was not written by god, it was written by a bunch of jewish old men who hated rome and roman rule. and, the earth is billions of years old, not 6000.

Religion and morality are unrelated. If you were to actually practice what is in The Bible literally, you’d be in jail for murder, animal cruelty, subversion of the First and Thirteenth Amendments, and being a generally intolerant schmuck.

Meanwhile, you have atheists who actually do things to improve the state of world, not for fear of divine vindication or in want of a better afterlife, but rather out of the good of their own hearts.

When Extremist Muslim Terrorists, the Westboro Baptist Church, and Pedophile Priests appear to be the “Face” of God, this happens.

I think one thing that athiests and religionists can agree on is that if the Rapture causes all of the believers to disappear from the earth and leave the rest of us behind that it would be pretty damn sweet.

You have to remember that the book about the Higgs’ boson was supposed to be titled “The G*dd*mn Particle” but the publisher changed it.

A beilef in something more powerful than their “God of Abraham” is what REALLY freaks them out! It’s a lot to do with the NONviolence aspect.

I thought the millinianists main thing had to do with GOd and with the 1.000 years of God reining on earth, or something like that. So these have lost faith in GOd who was the whole point.

& @DrC: My wife and I are finding our families are an obstacle to allowing my 4 year old daughter make up her own mind. We have yet to bring up gods or religion with her (because she hasn’t) but we do have fairy tales. She knows fairy tales are “pretend” and so is Santa (she came to this conclusion herself last year just before her 4th birthday, a couple of days after Xmas day) but the Portuguese & Austrian custom of the Christ-child providing the gifts, and not father Christmas, has confused her. Who introduced the Christ-child to her? Yup, her grandmothers. We’re now about to enrol her into kindergarten and are a little worried about how the wider society will confuse her some more. But as she already likes to read, I’m sure she’ll find out for herself what else are fairytales.

I can find lots of instances of people being killed for not believing in god. I can even find instances of people being killed for believig in the “wrong” god or worshipping him in the “wrong” way. But I’m having trouble finding cases of people being killed for believing in a god.

Yep, it’s definitely some of the believers but, it’s also that you don’t exist.

In all of history (so far) the result of waiting long enough is destruction. It happens whether you believe or not

Matt Adams, your post speaks to itself. Some Christians are intolerant conservatives loaded down with prejudice, we knew that already, but it’s nice to get it confirmed. But not all are. Same with atheists. And give me a doubting atheist over a committed religious nut ANY day, in ANY circumstance.

Yeah, politicians give Christians a bad name. I go to church and I have liberal views. I’m pro choice. I’m not an insane politician. I don’t own guns. I support the assault weapons ban.
