Joan: Where did Alix get her sciene gene? Val: Her father... Val: Don't you remember how much he loved all things wild? Tromping through the woods, wading in a lake, gazing through a telescope at the stars... Joan: He'd be really proud of Alix. Val: I only wish she remembered him...

Sorta harsh.

Harsh, but that’s life. It’ll have to be enough that Val can tell Alix how much she’s like her dad.

You missed the point pal.

One of the things I love about this strip is that it doesn’t tiptoe round the realities of life.

yup- it hurts- rare for a comic strip. Johnston always tried to do a visual twist in the cartoon when the words were so heavy; I always appreciated that about her strip work, even if I didn’t agree with her philosophy or the conclusions she “drew”.

I believe this strip has the first reference to Val and Joan’s husbands. That’s soon after Wally moved next door to Val, way before he married Joan.

Aww, this one made me sad. My dad died when I was 20, and he would have loved my husband because they have a lot in common. My oldest also is a lot like him and would have loved playing chess with him. :‘( Plus I might have been a happier person if I didn’t have to go through that experience…
