Messing with the artist’s work is like photographing the interior of Westminster Abbey: you just don’t do it (learned the W.A. thing on my England trip last month; a guard/guide caught a woman near my brother and me in the act).

Light from the flash damages the plaster and colors, etc. Just one won’t do much harm, but the collective effects of thousands will trash the place. That is standard in most such places throughout Europe, or was 20 years ago when I was station over that way.
