She may be telling the truth. She might have no way of reading human expressions visually, and is relying on empathy.

Look, this comic is in its third week. Calling it “better than ‘Calvin & Hobbes’” is like calling the untitled, 800-word “Harry Potter” prequel “better than ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’”. Come back in five years or so, and then we’ll talk.

I think the Harry Potter prequel is better than the Wizard of Oz because I never liked the Wizard of Oz. Its all a matter of opinion.

I read “Ozy and Millie” at the time, and it’s very, very good. But that doesn’t make it logically necessary that “Heavenly Nostrils” is going to be good, too, though it’s certainly starting off well. Maybe the strip will be such a success that Dana will become filthy rich from her next contract and hire assistants out of the Famous Artists School to do the strip at 50¢ a panel while she settles down to a life of lying in a daybed reading expensive imported Mills & Boone novels and eating Swedish strawberry-and-licorice bonbons. Maybe she will fall on her head and join a cult that worships Ted Nugent. While these things would surely be most deplorable, such tragedies do come to pass in this vale of tears, and naught can we poor mortals do about it but to cry “Alas!” and “Boo-hoo!” and go back to watching illegally downloaded reality shows.

And, no, it’s not “all a matter of opinion;” some art is good, and some art is crap. I recommend C. S. Lewis’s “An Experiment in Criticism”.

And anyone who doesn’t enjoy the works of L. Frank Baum is a stinky goo-head. Even behind the Iron Curtain they loved «Волшебник Изумрудного города».

“Who am I? I am Susan Ivanova, Commander—” Wait, that’s not right.

Who am I? Computer programmer, opera singer, actor, slightly-world-famous expert on Lewis Theobald’s “Double Falshood; or, The Distrest Lovers” (1727), “Gasoline Alley” fan, Episcopalian, and I once backstage-conducted a performance of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” at Lincoln Center, and later co-introduced the song “Voulez-vous Hoppsasachen?” to New York City. “Gaudy Night” changed my life, and my wife went to Barnard.

But I haven’t the least notion of what a “crdit” [sic] may be. It sounds like something from the “Star Trek” episode with the space hippies.
