When I was growing up, my mother always left out paprika, parsley or nutmeg. She said it was “just a decoration.” Only after I started cooking myself did I realise that these spices actually have good flavours to contribute.

Womble — my mother believed that too. And by the time they’d kept those badly packaged spices for years on end, they were useless, or even tasted like carboard and lawn trimmings.

At first I thought that was Alton Brown but he keeps whole nutmeg in his pocket.

He does that all the thyme. Then one day, the ginger snapped and sprayed him with mace.

Meg always resented the unfavorable adjective she seemed to be stuck with, and the constant pinching had created a real sore spot.

We read the autobiography of Malcolm X in college. In the book it says that if you grate a whole nutmeg into a glass of warm water, it has the kick of 2-3 reefers. I’ve never tried it. I’ve never seen a whole nutmeg.
