The scientists all talk about how the world/universe is going to end in 5 billion years. And what if they are wrong? Who is going to know, or care.

Actually, our sun will not go “super nova” because it isn’t massive enough. On the other hand it will probably become a Red Giant’ whose outer surface will reach beyond the orbit of Earth, so Earth is pretty much doomed. …and it’s based on Stellar Astronomy.

Some scientists believe that we have about 150 billion years before the universe suffers total heat death.

I can understand, though, why some folks say that the world will end in five years or ten years or the end of 2012. You can make more money that way than going with 4,999,999,992 years.

And non-scientists say the whole magilla is just over 5,000 years old.

The end is coming! The end is coming! And there’s still so much I haven’t done! So little time, so much to do!

I’ve often wondered why people spend so much time arguing about something they will never be able to prove.

According to Bishop Ussher (the guy who calculated that the world was created on 23 October 4004 BCE), the world ended on 23 October 1996; therefore, we are not here.

I am 49. The world is going to end in, say, 30 years, if I’m lucky.

You appear to be laboring under the idea that if you don’t understand something it is unknowable. It is really quite simple, Grasshopper, telescopes are time machines as they look directly into the past and let us see all stages of the evolution of stars at the same time. The sun will never be a Supernova, that would require 3 times its mass; not even a regular nova either. It will gradually expand as it cools and absorb the inner planets in the far future. While “A little learning is a dangerous thing” ; a lot of ignorance is much worse.

Well, now that everyone here has tried to prove they are smarter than anyone else here, I’d just like to say “SO WHAT?” If you want an education, go get it. If you want heated intellectual discussions, go have them. Me, I’ve been there and done that so now I’m here to read the comics and enjoy the puns made by those who see the humor and comment.
