“Portrait of a Burger as a Young Calf: From Conception to Consumption”. Highly recommend it. I went vegetarian for two years, then fell off the wagon when I met my wife. No regrets. (c:

I ’m a huge fan of vegetarian food! I just love vegetarian stuff. There is always place for it on my plate… right next to my steak!

If you grow-up on a farm you learn that pets live inside the house and everything outside is food: animal and vegetable.

realities faced, choices made…I am vegetarian off & on. In fact, come to think of it, I am most “things” off & on…

I long ago came to terms with the fact that the steak on my plate used to be walking around. At every level, life consumes life (well, I think there’s lichen of some sort that eats rocks, but still…). We’re just sacks of meat ourselves, after all. “We fat all creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for worms. Your fat king and your lean beggar is but variable service; two dishes to one table, that’s the end.” — Hamlet

I’ve never taken a live chicken myself and turned it into a chicken dinner, but I think I could do it if I had to. Still, like working on the plumbing or buildung a house, if I can pay somebody else to do that for me, I’m happy with that arrangement.

I thought some of this was reaction to the massive turkey recall a bad strain that is “resistant to atibiotics”. Maybe if commercial growers didn’t pump so much antibiotics into their birds to keep them from sickness due to filth. I buy only free-range anibiotic free poultry and I roast a turkey breast about every 6 weeks- just for me! I finally located some organic pepperoni for my whole wheat and flax pizza. I also eat fruits and veggies (about 90% of weekly groceries) and get organic when I can afford it.

My grade school had a field trip to the Chicago Stockyards, where we saw some actual gutting on the hanging animals.

I have no objection to anyone else being vegetarian or vegan, so long as they don’t try to convert me. Humans are omnivores after all.

An old joke that people wouldn’t want to eat meat if they saw or heard about its processing.

My grandfather had a butcher store on his farm, so my mom grew up in the thick of it. She still eats meat, but loves veggies more. I try to get grass-fed beef or organic meats when possible.

I agree that eating moderate portions of healthy meats is good- never crap that is raised on bad conditions and artifically treated just to be bigger than normal and sterilized with poisons. I have watched enough of things like “Food Inc” and Jaimie Oliver’s shows etc to be well aware that fast food is the worst thing anyone can eat, and “normal” supermarket food is only a little better. If we want to be healthy but not vegan, it behoves us to search out the best sources we can find within our area and means.
