Weak chili. If you can call it chili at all. Sugar? Really?
The basic real chili is a stew of meat and chili peppers (I usually have four or five different kinds, as a minimum), spiced with cumin, garlic, and oregano. Don’t use burger. Cut the meat up fine but it will have more character than burger which loses character. Onions are basic. Beans are an extender, and tomato is not required – but both are pretty much traditional. If you need to put hot sauce or chili powder of any sort for heat you’re making it wrong. Add some hotter chilis into your original prep… Oh. And it takes time to simmer and the flavors to meld together. It takes hours to make chili.
This is ersatz chili, for people who don’t know the real thing. It would probably be edible. It wouldn’t be chili… Too many people don’t know what chili is. Know a guy who thinks if you add a bottle of hot sauce to anything it magically become chili. No it doesn’t become chili anymore than it is magically transformed into a unicorn.
I had to check on onion powder, I did not know this exists. Cooking chili (or curries or … any other stew) without ‘normal’ onions (or garlic) seems odd to me – but probably still better than always having canned food or eating out.
Imho It is a sad story that asking ppl to cut onions is already overwhelming – but I saw that egg powder is sold too, …
Is there even a joke in this one? She couldn’t figure out how to make this one exciting like suggesting Heart sneak out at night to attend a renegade chili cookoff to save the rec center? Weak.
I trust a recipe more when the meat is seasoned while it’s cooking as opposed to just seasoning the “broth.” I don’t know that I’d call this “chili” so much as “spicy meaty black beans” but I might make it. I’d omit the sugar; I wonder if it actually needs it. Sweetness absolutely can bump up the savory/spicy flavor but very often it’s just… Americans like sweet stuff, dump some sugar in (nb: I’m American).
Oh my God, the negative comments…what IS this? Are you all from the Luann comments. I always skip those. I hope this doesn’t end up being the norm here now. Sigh…:.

My chili is simpler, toss ingredients in, cook, toss in more, continue to cook, when the pot is full and hot, serve and eat.

Surprised it didn’t use POWDERED beans. Powdered onions? Powdered Garlic? Powdered Chili? Geesh, go buy a can of chili if you’re that lazy.
