Remember that the only “peace treaty” Putin would entertain is him getting part, and eventually all of Ukraine. He claims it’s always been part of Russia, but then why do they have a separate language and culture?

After the Soviet Union fell, the Russians could have joined Western Europe in their robust economy and become a modern state. The problem is that nobody there, having lived under totalitarian rule for centuries, had any idea how to do that. They sold the state assets off to a few guys, who installed Putin and made him rich, so he would do their bidding.

The point of NATO and the various evolutions of the EU is that it (a) stopped Europe from being attacked and (b) stopped European countries attacking each other, and so prevented major wars. The alliance has also done well in containing and then stopping conflict on the European mainland, principally the former Yugoslavia.

And the reason it worked as a deterrent to Russian aggression is because everyone knew it was solid. As soon as cracks appear (Brexit, tRump’s various comments) then the aggressors think it is ok to use force. Exactly what we have seen in Ukraine. Putin thought tRump had weakened the resolve of the West, so he attacked a peaceful neighbour.

Republicans used to love America and freedom and rights but now only love trump the dump, Russia, China and any third world dictatorships.
