A point to him. But there’s an important difference between voluntary servitude and what’s imposed from outside.

I think I’m the last person in the States without a cell phone. Not that I can haul my PC around with me.

    We did it to ourselves.

When our internet was out (our whole area had all day outages for two days!), all of us were in withdrawal, especially since the cable was also out one of the days. We left nasty messages with Frontier. Thank God for Kindle and Nook, and the Baen Free Library. I have a bunch of books downloaded.

While I have a so-called smart phone, it spends most of its time in my pocket. I prefer to live my life in the external world instead of pretending I’m in a virtual one.

The only time I’m really concerned with other people’s smartphone usage is when I see them driving and texting at the same time. For me, the smartphone comes in handy while driving because I can plug it in and use maps to get me to where I want to go. Plus there’s being able to play my downloaded music on my vehicle’s stereo.

I don’t have a smart phone either. But that has it’s drawbacks these days. When I needed to change the credit card on my Amazon account, they told me I had to open a new account. You can’t open a new Amazon account unless you can receive texts! So Amazon’s IT wizards have arrogantly decided the company doesn’t want any customers who don’t own smart phones!

You have to use one these days pretty much. I use mine for emergencies and appointments.

Some time ago I had a job at a tax preparation company during tax season. The space we had was attached to a high-end mall. I would go in there on my lunch break and people watch while I ate. I remember noticing the high number of people shuffling around while staring at their phones and not at the displays of the beautiful stuff around them. Why even be there if you’re not looking up?

This toon says it all. Yes, AI has been in control and replacing your intelligence for quite some time through APPs and social media.

Exactly! When people went on about trackers in the Covid Vaccine I laughed. You carry a tracker all the freaking time!

I carry a cell phone with me as it is the only phone I have but most of the time it stays in my pocket. I was at Disney World the week before last and amazed at the kids in strollers and kids walking around in the parks with their heads bent down reading/watching their cell phones.

The “area” in “area code” has been obsolete for decades now. It only signifies the part of the country in which the phone number was first issued, but you can easily take it with you wherever you move to. Indeed, that’s why we now designate phone numbers as 123-456-7890 instead of (123) 456-7890, because the parentheses suggested that the area code was optional if you were calling within the same area. It’s not optional anymore; you have to dial all 10 digits to call the house next door.
