Ye gods! Who on earth wants to celebrate a dude whose crimes against humanity were so egregious, even the Spanish government of the late 16th & early 17th Centuries said they were excessive?
(I know, I know . . . the same sort of hate-filled fools who see shooting unarmed people protesting peacefully as an act of heroism . . .)
Do you think we can get him charged with attempted murder? My first thought was ‘mercy’; but just as the State wants. i’m scared and afraid, i’ll be in the corner sitting for peace for all sentient beings. When inspiration comes i see where i can help.
It’s amazing that such a statue would be in a modern day US town, but my angst is coming from one who see’s Confederate generals on horseback at its state capitol grounds. We still have a long way to go for equality and fraternity.
Meanwhile, “news” sources were creating lines like this: “First responders arrive at the scene of a shooting Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, in Española, N.M., where a protest over a statue of Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate turned violent”. Oh, no, violent protestors again!
Mr Two Bulls rendering of the statue is excellent. See the Wikipedia article on Juan de Oñate. The statue has seen protest in the past.
In 1998, New Mexico celebrated the 400th anniversary of his arrival. Shortly before (December 29, 1997), and the close dates are no coincidence, unknown perpetrator(s) cut off the statue’s right foot35 and left a note saying, “Fair is fair.” Sculptor Reynaldo Rivera recast the foot, but a seam is still visible.
The “fair is fair” remark refers to the fact that Oñate ordered the maiming of survivors of a revolt at the Ácoma pueblo.
Of the 500 or so survivors, at a trial at Ohkay Owingeh, Oñate sentenced all men and women older than 12 to twenty years of forced “personal servitude”. In addition, men older than 25 (24 individuals) were to have a foot amputated. According to recent research, there is no evidence of this happening and that, at most, the prisoners lost some toes. This latter theory makes sense, for losing toes rather than a whole foot left the prisoners useful as servants. In Onate’s personal journal, he specifically refers to the punishment of the Acoma warriors as cutting off “las p untas del pie” (the points of the foot, the toes).
The conservative Republican, who now believes that former President Donald Trump poses a major threat to U.S. democracy, has been making a lot of media appearances. During a Wednesday night, October 4 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Hutchinson recalled that when she was working in the Trump White House, the then-president feared that someone would try to poison him.
Hutchinson told host Kimmel, “He does have a very potent fear of being poisoned…. He uses and prefers the small Heinz glass ketchup bottles, because he likes to hear his valet or whoever’s serving him his meal, he likes to hear the pop.”
Kimmel joked, “Really? I thought it was because his hands are so little…. You think he got this fear of being poisoned from all the ex-wives?”
The man who was shot was not killed (this is not suggesting it was okay to draw and shoot under the circumstances). That the county commissariat can even BEGIN to consider putting up that statue anywhere is beyond my ability to understand. And according to the news article I read, the only thing they’ve agreed to do, so far, is to not hold a dedication ceremony … “yet”. Who ARE these people??
The shooters name is Ryan Martinez, 23. Many different articles with different perspectives. After reading about a dozen I pieced together the elements they had in common on both sides.
1. Ryan was there wearing his MAGA hat which caused protesters and him to trade insults.
2. The police encountered Ryan’s and asked him to leave for which he apparently complied.
3. Shortly thereafter he ran into another group of protesters where he was assaulted.
4. He managed to break away from those assaulting him, ran away while the protesters chased him.
5. Ryan jumped over a retaining wall and found an even larger crowd ahead of him.
6. He stopped, turned around and saw the crowd chasing him closing on his position.
7. At this point trapped between a larger crowd and his pursuers, he pulled his weapon and fired.
The facts and additional circumstances will come out during the trial. There is video evidence from several different sources part of which I have seen. It appears Ryan may have good case for self defense. Who knows, it will have to play out in court. I’m still digging into this.
That all said, I don’t know why anyone would be in support of Juan de Onate.
Okay, found several videos of the action. Looks pretty clear that Ryan was running away in fear for his life. You can see a small mob chasing and a few big guys assaulting him.

Looks like the horse is only tolerating Onate because it has to. Great drawing, Mr. Two Bulls.
