Always loved the “one armed bandit” peripheral on their computer. As the child of someone who lost it all in the 1929 crash, it was drilled into me “never stocks, FDIC only!” It took me 20 more years after this cartoon before I dared investing online. But the interests rate crater finally did me in. Even with putting money in at reputable brokerage firms, as a small investor who follows instructions to “diversify, let it ride, don’t try to time the market, stay strong in downturns, it’s gut-wrenching how quickly you can lose how much money. Except for the post Marmalade boom in 2021-early 2022, which gave me enough earnings to be just be sweating paper losses right now, except for my HSA, eyeroll, my investments have given me returns about on par with my savings account anyway. Retirement may be looking bleak.

I really is more reminiscent of a casino than a true determinant of value, in spite of all of the “math”.

Ah yes. The good ol’ days of dot com. I can still hear the faint echos of the horror in the world wide web.
