Truth in teaching history gives a chance that mistakes we made in the past are not repeated. Too bad squiggles (see first comment above) doesn’t understand the value of education – history as researched by historians – not by political types fighting for their agenda and power.
Oops. I apologize for today’s cartoon arriving late. I went to bed early last night and totally forgot to upload (I usually upload two at a time). This is entirely my fault and that of GoComics. Mine mine mine, me, me, me. My fault. Thanks for reading and for the several emails I received this morning. Several.

So this thing in Florida, the education folks there deciding that it’s important for students to learn that slaves in America often learned useful skills while being forced to perform, well, these same useful skills… In the criticism that’s followed here, it has struck me that the critics aren’t explaining themselves completely. Right, first, I’m pretty sure none of these people are saying this isn’t true: Slaves would have naturally gotten good at the tasks they had to do as per their owners and some of these tasks would have been beneficial to them if and when they ever gained their freedom. But time is always at a premium when deciding school curricula. Therefore, why would THIS fact be considered that vital? I mean, if you made a GOOD and BAD column on a sheet of paper and listed under each the good and bad things involved when it comes to enslaving humans, the GOOD column would have one thing listed beneath it at most, while the list of facts under the BAD column would go on forever! Easy to see the ulterior motive here: It’s a distraction away from the truth – plus, you mention this so-called GOOD, and then there’s less time in class to note, oh by the way, all of those BADS. Here’s a good analogy… Imagine if the Holocaust got the same treatment. Recently read an obit in the NY Times of a Jewish man. Born in Europe. Placed in a concentration camp while a young boy, at some point during WWII. And he survives because he was into magic and knew how to perform a few tricks, and the officers at the camp enjoyed having him perform these tricks. Now, the other part of this story is that no one else in his family survived. And he did make it to America, and he made a living here being, yes, a magician. Yet, it just aint normal to consider this story and think this: "Wow, the Holocaust was bad, but it did help some survivors learn good-paying trades that many utilized when they got to America.
Back in the ‘Old South’ there were the plantation owners and then the rest. No real middle class at all. The difference between the slaves and the white working class was that the white workers did get a paltry wage enough to live on for the same skills, but not enough to move up or move on. Their freedom was only slightly better than the slave. They were convinced by the plantation owner to defend their ’state’s rights’, which was to keep slave labor making the owner more wealthy, because they were better off than those slaves. The original use of the ‘Southern Strategy’ Nixon later used to convert conservatives in the South to the Republican Party. Those brave poor Southerners bled and died on the battle field believing the lie and defending the conservative wealthy elite. The conservative wealthy have manipulated the under classes since time began, with no shortage of those who thrive on being lied to. conservative philosophies only benefit the wealthy at the cost to the rest, and change with whichever way the winds blow to their benefit. conservatives are the enemy of the U.S., and have been since 1774.
I suppose Death Sentence would clutch her pearls so she best not read this: If the owner of the plantation didn’t rape his slaves, his overseer probably did. What “benefit” for the slaves could that possibly be? As for the deranged troll above, just ignore the dang thing for the rest of the century.

More lies to push racial division. Sad. Can’t wrap hate speech in the cloak of humor no matter how one tries to justify it.

DeSantis has no problem making black children uncomfortable with the lies that make white children more comfortable.
