Wouldn’t throwing it damage the floor?

A joyous, obviously exhilarating hour spent in a bowling alley is certainly not inferior in the scheme of things to a torpid, nonattentive hour listening to string quartets. – Samuel C. Florman, The Existential Pleasures of Engineering

For some reason the line from Arthur (1981) popped into my mind: “Thank you for a memorable afternoon; usually one must go to a bowling alley to meet a woman of your stature.”

A favorite quote that comes from “The Most Interesting Man in World” Dos Equis beer commercial, is….“And when I bowl, I bowl overhand….”

Another gag for old people. The bowing alleys around us over the years were either closed up, torn down for new construction or converted to new age churches and the like.

One near me, after being closed for years, became an extension of the rehab hospital next door.

My first game of bowling was when I was in 9th grade and our local newpaper hosted a bowling party for all the news carriers at the local lanes. I had so much fun I ended up joining a bowling league and playing all through high school and college. I was still playing up to my thirties when my arthritis started getting so bad that I couldn’t bend down while throwing the ball. The last time I went bowling with some friends about 20 years ago my joints were so stiff and sore that it was painful for me to play and I was still dropping the ball from knee height instead of ankle height.

considering what terrible shape baldo is in, he’s going to be in a lot of pain later on…

bowling was a big fad in japan years ago and, like most fads here, it died out almost as quickly as it started. we now have abandoned bowling alleys in almost every town (although the one in our town is amazingly still in use), usually right next to the abandoned pachinko parlor…
