A stick in the ground is also a useful way of determine which way is N-S-E-W during the daytime. Place a stick in the ground standing up. Mark where the tip of the shadow is. Wait a few minutes and then look where the tip of the shadow has moved to. Draw a line from where it was to where it is. That line roughly runs east to west with west being toward where the shadow started and east being where you stopped. At that point, north and south are easy.
The sun moves from east to west so the shadow moves from west to east.
