Iowa Republicans push ‘profoundly cruel and petty’ food benefit restrictions
Republicans in the Iowa House introduced legislation this month that would impose a slew of fresh restrictions on the kinds of food people can purchase using SNAP benefits, sparking outrage among local groups who say the measure would exacerbate hunger in the GOP-dominated state. The Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC), an interfaith group that operates the largest food pantry network in Iowa, noted in a statement earlier this week that if the bill passes, “Iowans could no longer use their SNAP benefits to purchase meat, nuts, and seeds; flour, butter, cooking oil, soup, canned fruits, and vegetables; frozen prepared foods, snack foods, herbs, spice—not even salt or pepper.”
We now have the Groucho Oppositional Party. Their motto and party platform is “Whatever it is, I’m against it.” With a horse with feathers as its emblem.
Do you think these repubs are simply coming up with these ideas out of political/economic doctrine? Who benefits from their actions? Take today’s bill the House put forth, about the “Fair Tax”, a 30% sales tax on all goods, eliminate the income tax (and the IRS along with it), the bill also eliminates the tax on corporate profits and capital gains. Gee, that’s really going to help a working stiff like myself very much. The Wealthy Elites? Gee, I dunno. (The far-right SCOTUS gave corporations the First Amendment right of Free Speech a few years ago, formerly only accorded to flesh&blood American citizens. Soon, these corporations may get an even bigger gift!, gift-wrapped by the republican party!)
Destroying democracy from within is a time-tested method of fascist tyrants. All they need now is an ignorant, passive populace to go along. Oh, wait….
Libertarians, who have taken over the Repubs are the most stupid people on the planet. They have no understanding of why governments exist in the 1st place. If they get their way here ..welcome to Somalia.
Funny how they only want to break the government under a Democrat presidency. The national debt rose by nearly $7.8 trillion while Trump was in office.
