Ah, yes, I remember “dials”. Also phone booths, phone books, and long-distance operators.

Can the call be completed as it was buttoned?

When my caller-id box captures the number of a spammer and I use the recall button, that is what I usually hear.

whenever that happens I just hang up the phone——just as soon as I find something to hang it on

I remember getting a lecture about using ‘long distance’ sparingly because of the cost involved. Also remember when we changed from a four-number phone number to a seven-number phone number and all that was involved then to call relatives in the same town ! ! ! !

I know how he feels. Last year, our state government decreed that we must now dial “1” + the state area code + 7-digit number for ALL calls!
