The intent of the song seems to be two-fold, neither healthy: 1. Cause children to be paranoid. [And let’s not forget that Jesus is also watching constantly]. 2. To inspire greed by linking good behavior to getting lots of presents.
I have always been baffled by the fact that most nursery rhymes and bedtime stories are inexplicably scary if not downright horrific. For example, “Rock a bye baby in the treetop”. WTF? Try this and be ready for a visit from the boys in blue and/or the ones in white. And didja know that “RIng around the rosies, pocket full of posies” depicts the plague? That’s why it ends with “We all fall down”. They’re all DEAD. Is this really a mental picture we want our kids to start their lives with?
Another aspect of “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” that I pondered as a kid was those kids in girls and boys land dancing around a Christmas tree. Where is this place??? Could it be some sort of secret cult? Go figure.

Naughty Sarah, what do you do when you’re awake but should be asleep?
Santa knows.

My theory is that Santa is actually a spirit rather than a person, so he’s around everybody’s house. Every day. Never leaves. Creepy.
