The overlords will have their way no matter what. The answer is to pull a Teddy Roosevelt and break up the corporations. And get rid of Citizens United — a stain on this country.
Union, no union, automation will win if it makes the corporation more money. It’s just harder to take away the jobs from a union than from a “right to work” (for less) employee.
Considering that most CEOs make 300 – 400 times their average employee (imagine the gap for these front-line workers) , cut their pay and then companies can afford to pay decent wages to their employees.
Starbucks is opening more stores in my area at a ridiculous rate; there’s one every 1/2 mile plus adding more inside other stores. Personally I despise their coffee because I think it tastes burnt. They have not been able to staff their stores so I’m sure this has been the plan even without the push for unions.
People keep whining about gas prices but will pay far more per gallon for coffee while they wait in the drive-thru.
Unions get a bad rap because they defend the common worker. And yet.. the very people that badmouth the unions owe their benefits/pay to.. what unions have acquired.
I make my own coffee. It’s cheaper and I don’t have to deal with people ordering a double chocolate venti latte with musk ox milk, an extra shot, over ice with a kiss blown at it.
Unions begin by benefiting their members, but at some point ‘The Union’ as an entity becomes focused on itself rather than its members. Then the danger becomes: Unions can do for Starbucks what they did for the American auto industry.
Why do conservatives keep bringing up automation as some sort of consequence of demanding better ANYTHING? Those who were going to automate were going to automate as soon as they could anyway. (See: McDonalds)
Unions don’t cause automation. That’s absurd. Automation has been replacing jobs since the Industrial Age. If you can be replaced with a machine that is more accurate, durable, reliable, and capable, then it’s time to upgrade. And hope your significant other doesn’t buy one!
They go automated, I’ll never go to a Starbucks again. Not that I do very often anyway.
There’s a new little coffee spot in town that is cute, relaxing, and makes good coffee. They don’t have a drive through, but that has not been a problem.
Coffee. Feh. I used to like the smell of it, but years of working across the hall from the break room left me disgusted by a whiff (particularly when it was my month to clean the break room each year).
It is essential that there should be organization of labor. This is an era of organization. Capital organizes and therefore labor must organize.Theodore Roosevelt
The labor unions shall have a square deal, and the corporations shall have a square deal, and in addition, all private citizens shall have a square deal.Theodore Roosevelt
The need for unions is long past and their continued existence does more harm than good. The legal reforms on issues such as child labor, sweatshops and dangerous work conditions make unions unnecessary.

Employees of the companies who are purveyors of the worst beverage in the history of beverages, should be able to unionize!

Cool. Starbucks won’t need to rent ANY actual stores, either. Just some automated kiosks in every Walmart.
Until Walmart realizes they can cut out the middle man.

Workers are being replaced by automation/robots everywhere, not just at Starbucks.

I can see Stanti’s pieces being easily replaced with automation.

Make people too expensive to hire and businesses will find a way. Labor has value and so many people fail to understand that.

There should be another pane showing the Starbucks robot handing a tin of oil to another robot. “Great Replacement”, indeed.
