Why would whistling on the way to the fishing hole, swimming hole in my case, and throwing stones have only happened on tv? My childhood was a blend of Andy Griffith show, the Beverley Hillbillies, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, My family were poor people, living with old type values, but we ran a meat processing plant on the farm, and since they couldn’t afford a babysitter for me I helped out in the slaughterhouse when out of school from about age 6 or 7.
My childhood was in a very remote valley in BC.. hunted and fished the year round, one room school (4 kids in my grade)…. wouldn’t trade it for all the tea in China. Saddens me that my grandkids have never cleaned a fish or shot a gopher, lived without electricity or a phone.
My youth in the 50s was very cool and though growing up very poor in money, I wouldn’t swap a minute of it. However, while I am rounding third and heading for home, in the baseball metaphor of life, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead…..
I am glad to be rid of childhood. I expect that it will be more appealing as I get older but for now, I spent so much time and effort to get over 21 I don’t ever want to go back.
One reason for the huge … and continuing… popularity of the Andy Griffith Show was that Mayberry was such a pleasant place to retreat to and escape the nastiness of the real world. Their problems were never very serious and would always be solved over the course of that all-too-brief half hour. Most of the actors have sadly left us but the show will always remain as a virtual tranquilizer to be taken when needed.
