Yeah. First (penultimate) Spouse absolutely would NOT do anything consequential unless it was HER idea. Period. When I realized I was scheming to make her think she had decided something, that was the beginning of the end of the marriage.

I kinda think Caulfield doesn’t mind being told to read so much as he dislikes being told what to read.

And, as for many of us oldsters like Mrs. Olsen, our comfort zones are narrow and set like concrete from constant repetition. Breaking the mold can range from simply bothersome to outright damaging to the psyche. Depends on the habit and the reason for the change.

    I can’t believe I’m saying this but Mrs. Olson‘s got a point.

I kind of remember Frazz saying the same thing to Caulfield and the response was “I do not like being told what to read”

I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.

I grok this. The more that people tell me how great a book or movie or TV show is, the more disappointed I’ll be when I finally read or see it: even if it’s pretty good, it won’t match the expectations the raves have created.

On the other hand, “I think you’d like this” is a reasonable recommendation.

Ironically, Frazz had to endure being told.
