Uvalde’s congressman dodges gun-control questions after shooting: ‘Not today’
A day after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school, the Republican congressman representing the district said it was not time for policy debates. Instead, he argued that Americans needed to be united and that love should bring people together.
“Because what happened in Uvalde, Texas, can happen anywhere,” Rep. Tony Gonzales said Wednesday on “CBS Mornings.” “And we have to be united in protecting our children against that.”
After Uvalde, angry Democrats assail GOP over resistance to gun laws
After the massacre in Uvalde, a 2021 tweet in which Gonzales boasted about voting against the bills was shared widely on social media. “I voted NO on two gun control measures in the House today,” Gonzales tweeted. “I am a proud supporter of the Second Amendment and will do everything I can to oppose gun grabs from the far Left.”
“We can’t stop bad people from doing bad things,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said. “They’re going to violate murder laws, they’re not going to follow gun laws, I’ve never understood that argument.”
That left Colbert scratching his head.
“I gotta say: ‘Laws are pointless’ is a bold position for the attorney general,” Colbert said. “I think he just announced ‘The Purge.’”
Texas mass shooting cynically exploited to advance war on public schooling
Republicans from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene quickly dismissed the idea of even talking about gun control legislation, while criticizing Democrats for, in their mind, politicizing a senseless tragedy. But one conservative writer exploited the Uvalde shooting as an opportunity to attack one of the GOP’s favorite targets: public schooling.
“Tragedies Like the Texas Shooting Make a Somber Case for Homeschooling,” reads the headline of a piece by Jordan Boyd, a writer for The Federalist. The argument is staggering in its cynicism and defeatism: an easy-to-access stream of high-powered weaponry poses a constant threat to children in schools across America. But the answer isn’t to pass legislation that improves gun safety. Boyd is proposing we shut down our schools instead.
But Boyd doesn’t want to get rid of public schools out of a desire, held by many conservatives, to end all forms of public education from the Department of Education on down. No, she’s just thinking of the children.
The NRA seems to believe that these “school events” are reason enough for teachers to have guns in schools……………they probably think Nero should have had more violins to play so Rome could have burned faster.
The political representatives of the murdered people nationwide need have no worries – their children all go to private schools which haven “yet” been shot up
21— number of times The Onion has re-published its satirical headline in the past eight years: ‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens.
Over the years from 1998 to 2019 the United States had 101 mass shootings, France had the second highest number with 8. Australia who strictly reformed its gun laws had 1.
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Children, teachers, grandmothers, shoppers, and other bodies work just as well.
Republicans’ “solutions” to mass shootings are meant to make you feel helpless
Tucker Carlson of Fox News, of course, only speaks in Smarmy Jerk so he really leaned into the “there’s nothing to be done” message Wednesday night. “A person who is intent on committing violence is very hard to stop,” he claimed, adding that neither “act of Congress” nor “gun control” will do a thing to stop it. In reality, of course, international data shows the opposite, gun control is very effective at stopping gun violence.
Republicans hoping to take back the House this midterm cycle are trying to move past 2020, but former President Donald Trump is refusing to back down from his claims that the election was “rigged” and is warning his inner circle about breaking from him.
On Thursday, Trump issued a stark warning to his allies, threatening to shun them if they admitted he was defeated by President Joe Biden in the last presidential election.
Speaking about former presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway, Trump said that he would have told her to “go back to her crazy husband,” prominent Trump critic George Conway, had he known that Conway, who also served as Trump’s 2016 campaign manager, believed he lost the election.

We were hardly aware of the hardships they beared,
For our time was taken with treasure.
Oh, life was a game, and work was a shame,
And pain was prevented by pleasure.
The world, cold and grey, was so far away
In the distance only money could measure.
