It’s the same instinct that makes us want to ask a dozing person are you asleep? or to touch a wet paint sign. Just can’t abide anything not paying attention to us.
Reminds me of a great Gary Shandling joke: A guy sticks his head out the window and yells “Moo” while driving past some cows. One cow turns to the other and says “Imagine that…. a cow driving a car”.

I always say “Hi, how are ya” etc. to the barking dogs we pass on our walks. My wife threatens to walk alone. P.S. Enjoy the holiday.
