“Race” is a construct. There are only humans. That hasn’t stopped one set of humans for using demographic labels (race, religion, sex, economic class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.) as a means to suppress and kill that hated group. It’s human nature, unfortunately. We hate. We kill. Dig deep enough and you’ll find greed is the reason. It’s the most humanistic trait there is.

Conservatives have adopted that christian based legal framework of persecution to include any non-white, female, biblically-gendered non-conformist to that ideology.

I personally knew two Jews who were in concentration camps and survived! They showed me the tattoo of numbers in their arm….so sad to think humans treat other humans like garbage…sick, evil minds.

Call me naïve, but there used to be 3 races, each with clear, visible differences: Caucasian, black, oriental. There wasn’t really a question of source, or the “first” person (or couple) of each of the 3 races. Of course the 3 races could, and did, and will continue to blend.

Apparently, in 1935, Germany under Hitler’s leadership decided that a race could be defined as everyone who could trace their roots back to a Caucasian named Jacob. But some hundreds of years later, many of Jacob’s descendants became Christians. These were RELIGIOUS choices. (They moved from Moses & the prophets to Jesus Christ.) These new Christians quickly realized that they could include any and all people in their religion. Hitler hated people who chose to KEEP the Jewish religion and culture (or who were simply born into it). (Culture has always been determined, to some extent, by a society’s religion, or lack of religion.)

And I think it’s worth pointing out that people can (and have always been able to) convert to the religion and culture of Judaism, of their own free will. Furthermore, of course, Jews can and do convert to Christianity.

Hitler got what he deserved for his hatred and treatment of many segments of humanity, but we need not call this segment a race, as he did. If nothing else, it’s ignorant, inaccurate. We may consider someday the big question of WHY he called them a race, but the fact remains, Hitler hated them for their religion, and maybe more so for their culture, despite calling them a race.

There is only one race! The Human race. Skin tone comes from where your ancestors lived and its effects from the sun. A person’s linage is from their ancestor’s home area not from their physical characteristics. Quick asking what race a person is; there is only one answer. Human race!

Seems confusing to overlap the broad definitions of “race”, “ethnicity”, “heritage”, “linage”, “history”, “skin color”, “faith”, and “religion” to construct a tight argument for or against what Whoopi said or meant to say. Like the word “faith”; the speaker and the listener will pull out pieces of an almost nebulous concept for a precise personalized definition to form meaning for an argument. Here we are arguing with tools of smoke to bolster concise preconceived opinions but alas, weak arguments. My opinion is that she is not particularly anti-semitic. History (before Republicans rewrite it) relates that Hitler did not have a high opinion of Jews, or, of black people either. I expect Whoopi kept both in mind when she spoke of the Holocaust. Ramirez is correct that “race” is not limited to black and white. The word is now so wide and misused that it can mean almost anything and be a universal weapon for both attack or defense. Ramirez has used it for attack.

Judaism isn’t a race, it’s a religion, and its followers have built a society largely based on it. Why did Hitler call it a race? And why do we continue the same when speaking of him? We don’t need to SEPARATE Jews from the rest of us. There are 3 races, and they all blend more now, but religions generally don’t blend; they’re joined or left. (& non-Jews can join the Jewish religion, even if they’re not white.) Maybe this is just a matter of words, but didn’t Hitler have some reason for calling Jews a race? & I don’t think it was a good reason.

Since when do we acknowledge, let alone accept, definitions, law or actions made by Nazi Germany?

If Ramirez wants to recognize the 1935 Nuremberg Race Laws then is he saying that all the rest of Nazi Germany’s laws should apply in the U.S. today? Or is this just another in a long line of conservative ‘pick-and-choose’ what laws we obey because we like them, and what laws we won’t obey because we don’t like them?

The term “race” is difficult to define. Canadians conventionally refer to French Canadians and the other kind as different “races”, or they used to. Maybe no more, at least if race is understood to be mainly about skin color. The Nazis and others referred to a “Jewish race” but that expression is quite without meaning, like “Catholic race” or “Irish race”. (NB in much of the 19th cent. there was considerable discussion about whether the Irish were Homo sapiens at all.)

For those speaking of Jews as “race”:

Cultural anthropologists separate people by the language they spoke not by religion. Among the ancient peoples the “Semitic peoples” included Aramaeans, Phoenicians, the Akkadians, the Hebrews as well as others from that part of the world who spoke languages derived from the same source. Those who disparaged Judaism had to find some way to direct the hatred by others at those they did not like.
