There is among female African American legal scholars and jurists an enormous pool of legal talent that has been nurtured and cultivated but which has gone largely untapped. Deliberately choosing to make a beeline for this deep bench of talent only makes sense.
It is kind of like what happened in baseball. Following the Chicago “Black Sox” scandal of 1918, baseball established a commissioner of baseball and appointed Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, an outspoken white supremacist, who decreed that African Americans would not be allowed play in the major leagues. He held office from 1920 to 1944. When he left, he was replaced in 1945 by Happy Chandler, senator from Kentucky, a Southern state, but who was amenable to the idea of allowing African American talent in baseball.
General Manager Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers looked over to the enormous reservoir of athletic talent in the old Negro Leagues of the segregated baseball era — Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, “Cool Papa” Bell — that was just sitting there. They were absolutely the equals — the stars were the superiors — of their counterparts in the American and National Major Leagues. Mr Rickey made a conscious decision to reach into this available pool of talent, and recruited young African American players starting with Jackie Robinson and quickly adding Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe and others, and took the Dodgers from perennial losers who had never won a World Series and only one league title in the previous 20 years to perennial contenders who won multiple league championships and World Series. Was it racist of Branch Rickey to see a pool of untapped talent and focus his recruiting there?
In promising to select a qualified African American woman from among the many who have been too long neglected, Joe Biden did the political equivalent of what Branch Rickey did in baseball. He saw a rich pool of untapped talent and decided he would be the first to take advantage of it.
Didn’t the orange maroon say he was going to appoint a woman? Did anybody complain about her gender? Of course not, Democrats tend to complain about real problems. Histrionics about non-problems: Mostly the rong wing snowflakes.
He knows there are several well qualified black female candidates. The right however wouldn’t even give Merrick a hearing so, in their view, a black female is (ahem) beyond the pale.
Errm, isn’t there something in the EEOC regulations forbidding race, ethnicity, religion, skin color, sex, etc. as a pre-qualifier for a job? Of course that’s not an issue for the Biden crime cartel which has received over $30 million from China and 18 million from Russia and its surrogates.
White nationalists aside, the American people will recognize and appreciate that President Biden nominated someone qualified to the position of Justice.
By all means make this an issue. The midterms are coming up. Everyone knows how much America loves it when Republican hypocrisy and racism is on display.
Sadly Joe did not learn from his pick for VP. Selecting the best qualified should not be based on gender or color. Go for competence Joe.. which may well be a black female.. but let that be the last, not first.. prerequisite.
Coming up a trans jurist, just as soon as we can figure out which sex she/he wants to be. Stay toon to this comic for breaking news or toon in on to Fox not breaking news.
under the articles of confederation there was a random element to picking a justice. . .. Maybe should think of bringing that back and take a little of the partisanship out of the process
Hold on. Until 1967, it was pre-determined that a SCOTUS nominee would be a White man. Until 1981, a man. How is this any different, except that it is being purposely diverse?
Reagan pre-announced his intention to appoint a woman. Thomas was appointed specifically because he was Black (to replace Marshall). Scalia was appointed because Reagan wanted to appoint an Italian-American. Barrett was appointed specifically because the Federalist Society wanted to replace RBG with a woman. And goodness knows that Brewski McKegger was selected to represent alcoholic jurists everywhere.
The right has an Oreo cookie sex offender, a drunk that was a serial sex offender and a white woman that the ABA said was unqualified for the SCOTUS position, maybe they need to STFU. Do I hear a hell yeah?
Of all the Supreme Court justices in history, something like 94% have been white men. 0% have been black women. Who’s been racist and discriminatory all these years?

So, LBJ had the same problem when he picked Thurgood Marshall in 1967? I won’t mention Uncle Thomas and George Bush in 1991.

SKelley really, really wants the whole issue of race to be cleared up. Really.
By putting ONLY another white man on the court.
.
Anything else, is obviously biased and bigoted.

Wasn’t Clarence Thomas chosen to fill the unofficial “Black seat” previously occupied by Thurgood Marshall?

If the default assumption is that only the best candidates get picked, Trump’s B-lister choices completely blow those arguments out of the water.

“Must be a black woman”, because his V.P. choice has worked out so well. How about this approach. Must be the most qualified for the job. Just sayin’.
