Our technology fast outpaces our moral and intellectual development. Basically, we are the same aggressive, territorial, tribal simians as we were on the Savannah.
These same people were Luddites 20+ years ago. But tech made it too easy for them. Damn you, Steve Jobs and your ilk! :-) But the ignorance was always there, it’s just “out” now.
The proliferation of bad information on social media is due to several factors, as I see it:
1. Bypassing legitimate gatekeepers. As we saw with #45, you can say any stupid thing you want and no one can filter you out. Scientists are treated as equal with ignoramuses with a YouTube channel
2. The Dunning-Kruger Effect. A lot of people know just a little, but they think they know more than other people. You need deeper education to appreciate how little you know, and sadly, if you are a well-hardened victim of D-K, you feel no need to get it.
Monkeys playing with dynamite. Soon, and with increasing ease, artificial intelligence will surpass native intelligence. AI will soon suffer the bigotry and hatred that the enlightened endure from the ignorant. Then, and if for no other reason, AI will ironically fit the definition of being human. You are human if you are hated.
Take heart, Jen. There are far more Americans who are doing the right thing (at least most of the time). It’s just that the ignorant rabble get all the media attention because that’s what generates clicks. Social media is what we make of it. This is why I believe that elementary, middle and/or high school age children need to learn critical thinking so they will be less susceptible to conspiracies and other BS.

Technology and social media are causing the human race to regress culturally and intellectually. Many of the comments posted here prove it every day.

Martin Luther nailed up a list of ninety-five objections onto the cathedral door, but I don’t recall any of them being about vaccination.
