We did have a voting rights program, it included provisions against gerrymandering, among other provisions. The “Supreme Court” dumped most of it, and the next day Republicans started gerrymandering like crazy. They are still at it.
We should make it easy to vote, but impossible to cheat. The voter bill is a Democratic “power grab” and an undue increase in federal power, rather than a way to increase voter participation. Thank goodness for Joe Manchin.
What I see is dash of cheating by voters. It is so unusual that it has no impact on any election. Still it should be prosecuted. The prime job of the voter bill seeks to see that we voters can have fair and reasonable opportunity to vote. To me that’s an American ideal.
Sigh. Once again, yet again, as a matter of objective reality, deliberate voter fraud is extremely rare and quite literally every knowledgeable person, whether conservative, liberal, or (like myself) a moderate, is perfectly aware of this, and quite literally all honest people admit this. The states wanting to suppress the votes of people who deserve the right to vote didn’t start with the Big Lie as their excuse (they’ve been trying other methods for decades), but it sure as hell sped up the downward spiral of voting rights. And the most important of the changes isn’t even making it harder to vote absentee or to register (or to stay registered—purging the rolls, anyone?) No, it’s putting supporters of Traitor Trump into positions where they can toss out election results they don’t like—no matter how legitimate the results. As conservative icon wrote of the two Seditionist Senators, the contemptible Ted Cruz and the even more contemptible Josh Hawley, they weren’t objecting to the certification of Joe Biden’s (absolutely legitimate) election victory because of viable objections. No, they simply did not like the result—and they both want to use Traitor Trump’s base to further their own ambitions. They constantly pander to the base, even though both are elitists who disdain the aforementioned base.
What the fascists continually omit from their rants is this…
Almost all of the “voter frauds” and “voter cheats” and “voter irregularities” (and there were an very, very, very, very small number – and they were found out) under the existing system of voting in 2020 were committed by reThuglicans.
Just like Goebbels and Hitler taught them in the play book for The Big Lie they always claim everyone but them uses…
“Always accuse the others of that which you are guilty”
Democrats want all American citizens to be able to easily vote. Republicans are arranging for voting to be difficult or even impossible for anyone who isn’t likely to vote Republican. Which approach is a power grab?
Don’t kid yourself. Manchin loves his new position of power, attention and wants to keep getting re-elected in GQP territory. Like many in politics his allegiance is to his big doners, many of which are GQP-ers.
Republicans are a diminishing minority and know they can’t win without rigging the game. They certainly have no interest in representing the people (A Fox News poll this weekend shows 63% of Americans want to keep Roe v Wade, for instance). If they were interested in fair elections they would accept their losses. We all know how that’s been going.

My question is how Manchin ever convinced ANYONE he was a Democrat.

You have to register to vote. No one can just walk in and vote. If the registration is done properly, there can be no fraud.
Denying the access to the polls, that’s easy, and we know who’s working on that.
