Just put the filibuster back the way it was, where you actually had to stand there and talk non-stop until you had said everything you were going to say, or your catheter bag overflowed.
But as usual, no matter who says what about the filibuster, it’s all evil Joe Biden’s fault!
The minute the Party of Trump gets control of the Senate, they will establish ‘carve-outs’ for everything they want to pass or will eliminate the filibuster altogether.
The country is in a mess. The Biden administration inherited the mess, and has done everything possible to clean it up. But voters tend to vote against whoever is in office when they aren’t happy about the situation. On top of that, it’s pretty normal for the party holding the White House to lose seats in both houses in the midterms. So, the sensible thing to do is to accomplish whatever you can in the two years you have, then just try to hold on for the next two. And, hope there are enough Republicans who will vote for Trump to split the party and put a Democrat back in the White House in 2024.
There’s an argument to be made that if the fillibuster is killed and voting acts are passed, then Dems win Senate. Regardless, with or without fillibuster, Dems keep White House this year.
Now, Ted, you know that Joe Biden has never advocated the dissolution of the whole of the filibuster rule. Rather, he advocates a return to the rule of his earlier time in the Senate when the filibusterer had to remain standing and talk about the issue at hand. What we have now is practically a tag team filibuster. It’s a joke of a rule that is used, by both parties, to block needed legislation. It’s minority rule, and not at all what it was intended when it was first enacted.
Mr. Rall, I just want to point out that the Republicans ALWAYS had a high chance of retaking the Senate and plenty of other politicians, including Sen. Sanders have been and still are calling on ending it.
The Left, during (and before) the 2020 primaries, and Day One of the Biden presidency: “The filibuster needs to go if Democrats have a chance to turn this country around and prevent republicans from killing our democracy.”
Joe Biden, on Day One of his presidency: “We need the filibuster, what if we lose and we don’t have it anymore?”
Joe Biden, on Day 359 of his presidency: “We should consider possibly ending the filibuster maybe.”
It’s probably too late, Joe. Should’ve done it last year. Anything you do this year will be tied up in courts, so the fall elections may not be covered by whatever pathetic “compromise” comes out of the Senate.
As soon as it is in his interest to do something other than cut taxes or confirm judges McConnell will get rid of the filibuster. Its only because the republicans don’t really want to legislate on anything other than budget related measures that he hasn’t done it already. He cares about his personal ambition and wealth. He has no moral principles. One only has to see how he treated garland vs barretts nomination to understand that.
The very first time a Democratic filibuster stands in the way of any part of the Republican agenda, Republicans will not be even the slightest bit reluctant to end the filibuster, as they have already demonstrated with Supreme Court nominees.
When the filibuster was first initiated in the Senate, it purpose was to extend, not eliminate, public debate.
In 2015 every Republican from that guy that never wins is running for dog catcher this time, to the inexhaustible number presidential candidates, all were saying “Repeal Obama Care”, “Shred it” “Shoot it in the Face”! Yet some-how they wrestled control of the government and suddenly they were saying “Repeal and Replace”, “Yeah, we got a replacement plan soaking in a tub somewhere”. They couldn’t do it, because then they would have to own it. Let’s vote on things again, let the Democrats pass things that actually have a chance of making your life better. Won’t take long for people to figure out who is helping and who isn’t.

Hillary had a 90% chance of winning the Presidency, but we all know how THAT turned out.
This far out, any election prediction is just a wild a— guess.

It’s an anachronistic measure, just kill it completely.

Mr. Rall, where was the filibuster when McConnell rammed Handmaid Coney Barrett’s nomination for SCOTUS through the Senate?
The filibuster is NOT in the constitution, it is merely a rule.

Does anyone really think that Moscow Mitch won’t immediately move to abolish the filibuster the minute he (goddess forbid) becomes majority leader?

Better yet, end the Senate (but not before ending gerrymandering).

It doesn’t matter. The moment the filibuster becomes inconvenient for the Republican majority, they’ll get rid of it.
