    The Swedish word is “smörgåsbord” (smör-gås-bord), which breaks down into “smear goose table”. That has left me wondering if goose fat was originally one of the primary ingredients.

    My Swedish friends say that it’s an interesting thought, but they have no idea of the real origin of the word.

    “Smör” is also their word for butter, but that is just another something that one smears onto bread.
