This an excerpt from Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency, a forthcoming book by Jonathan Allen, senior political analyst for NBC News Digital, and Amie Parnes, senior correspondent for The Hill. The book, which will be published March 2 by Crown, tells the inside story of the 2020 presidential election and in particular of the many lucky breaks Biden got on his way to the Democratic nomination and eventually the presidency.
This excerpt describes what led to the pivotal moment in the primary season, when Biden got a key endorsement from Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C. The endorsement helped pave the way for his victory in South Carolina, in the Super Tuesday states a few days later and eventually in the race for the nomination.
If Bernie had won the nomination, the right would have had a field day with him. They would’ve called him a socialist, a communist, and an extremist. That would’ve scared enough of those ignorant right wingers to vote the Rump back in. I suspect Rall would’ve have rather had that then having Biden elected. He certainly made every attempt to denigrate Biden.
How about Republican congress men and women don’t vote against any measure proposed by President Biden just because a Democrat proposed it. That both sides negotiate in good faith to pass laws benefitting all citizens. Then maybe our government will function as it’s supposed to.
During the primaries the various political parties act as the private organizations that they are. To win the nomination you have to be a member of the party. AS much as I like him, Bernie still in not registered as a Democrat. You want to lead our group, then join our group.
There is that pesky “Senate” problem that “President Sanders” would be also facing. Or are we suggesting that his personality would have changed any of this sierra?
If successful companies picked their CEO’s the way America picks presidential candidates.. fraid those companies would no longer be successful. Popularity/name recognition is a poor substitute for competence.
More of the beating the dead horse here from the Bernie contingent. Keep it up while the country burns. From the NYT Good Morning by David Leonhardt today:
“American politics today is not really normal. It may instead be in the midst of a radical shift away from the democratic rules and traditions that have guided the country for a very long time.
An anti-democratic movement, inspired by Donald Trump but much larger than him, is making significant progress, as my colleague Charles Homans has reported. In the states that decide modern presidential elections, this movement has already changed some laws and ousted election officials, with the aim of overturning future results. It has justified the changes with blatantly false statements claiming that Biden did not really win the 2020 election."
Jack Ohman today has where the real problem is, not sour grapes over last year.
Sanders had zero support from the Democratic Base, African-American voters. Hell couldn’t even get his own voters to show up, there’s no chance he would have beaten Trump in either 2016 or 2020.
In 2016 Sanders used the same objections as tRump did to the primary rules of their respective party races. Neither read the rule book beforehand, or both are liars. tRump, not a Republican, went on to win the nomination and promised to join the Republican Party. He still hasn’t. Sanders lost the nomination but promised to join the Democrat Party. He didn’t. Bernie promised again to join the Democrat Party in 2020 while running for the Democrat nomination, and a week later registered his nomination for his senate seat as an Independent. He still has not kept that promise. Bernie Sanders is just the other side of the tRump coin.
Sanders knows better than anyone that he could not get anything he promises passed in the Senate. Republicans would never vote for anything he has promised, and many Democrats don’t like him much. He’d be as ineffective as Carter was, maybe worse. If not foe Clyburn we might have the insurrectionist liar tRump still in office.
Hey-Zeus Key-riste, Frederick Theodore Tall, III. It takes no arithmetic genius to ascertain that in the 2020 primaries, Biden received over 19 million votes, while Bernie won 9.5 million. So tell us how Bernie was winning all those primaries. Your revisionism is as pathetic as your hero, Trump. Accept the fact that the bros talk, but don’t walk.
People are looking for a politician that will help all Americans, not just the greedy rich. Bernie was that politician and would have kicked trumps huge ass.
A Super Tuesday I’ll never forget. Thanks a lot Clyburn. I was so stoked for Bernie, I was crushed. Biden in turn was crushed immediately for even daring to sound progressive. The US is an object lesson about what not to do to a democracy.
The DNC works behind the scenes to insure that their “brand” of Democrat is chosen to represent the party, not free thinkers. They will go to extraordinary lengths to accomplish their objective. In Nevada they are working behind the scenes because they are unhappy that progressive thinking individuals have wrested control of the Nevada State Democratic Party from their minions and are fighting back:
Another example of the establishment fighting back is the Buffalo mayoral race, where a progressive thumped a much more conservative candidate, suddenly a write in campaign ensued with an assist from the repubbas to get their candidate elected. The DNC often resorts to the same dirty tricks the repubbas are renowned for.

Clyburn stopped Bernie by convincing more people to vote for Joe. That’s part of democracy.

And yet Bernie fully backed up Biden’s run for president.

‘Feel the Bern’ lost steam after the South Carolina primary. Sanders brand of socialist utopia has limited appeal to communities of color.

How do you think Sen. Sanders could have done any better. Does his election mean that the MAGA party would suddenly disappear.
