The industry had supply chain problems as well as employee issues: Smaller supply of turkeys. So of course the prices goes up. Our local bird-ranchers actually saw this coming and increased their flocks of thanksgiving turkey chicks. The price IS high… but only about 5% higher than last year. And it’s local, so I know who raised them, how they were treated, etc.
PS: We usually have PART of a turkey for T’giving (thigh) as well as several fish dishes and sometimes a ham, though that’s more likely at Xmas.
Bought mine on sale earlier in the year. Commissary had them on sale at $0.99/lb. I had to look closely to find one small enough as most were between 15 and 20lbs, which is way too much.
Looks like Breen and some of the boomers have become full blown whiny twits over crap like Thanksgiving because gawd ferbid they can’t get that precisely 29.6784652 pound turkey for $0.33 (total, not just per pound) and an expired coupon for toothpaste. Has anybody not run into even more of those loud and nasty geezers while shopping this year?
We have just gone through four years of the rich feeding off of the poor worse than we’ve seen for many, many years and yet folks blame the kid stocking shelves instead of years of unrestricted greed and gimmee, gimmee, gimmee that led to a failed infrastructure, underpaid and under appreciated workers, and a bunch of broken systems we all depended on. That ain’t gonna change overnight especially if one party continues to make death threats to their own members of they dare to reach across the aisle. Y’all aren’t gonna get away with blaming just the employees putting the goods on the shelf for that.
I bought a frozen turkey breast a few weeks ago. Then Aldi had Turkey on sale for $.087 a pound last week, when I also bought an 11# frozen smoked and ready-to-thaw-and-eat butterball. I guess I’m set for the next three Thanksgivings. . . . Woops, the family overruled me this Thanksgiving . . . They decided on Bob Evans take-home. Oh well, there’s always Christmas and Easter.
At first glance I thought this toon is a metaphor for the ultra-rich stuffing themselves to the point of overflowing with their untaxed wealth while the rest of us scrabble for the side dishes. Being a vegetarian and consequently uninterested in turkey, I think I’ll stick with my misinterpretation.
Let me get this right, Depression Stevie, the government gives away a bunch of money, while the labor force is shut down, then we open back up and all of this money is trying to buy a bunch of limited stuff which resulted from the labor shortage, and people are wondering why prices are up?…………………..My kingdom for grown-ups!!!!
Or do what I do, avoid TG if at all possible. I give thanks for my blessings regularly and am in contact with my loved ones. I have never liked obligatory celebrations..
Personally, I am thankful for Covid vaccines which are available to 5 and up + the booster. I am thankful because all the members of my family are vaccinated so we can have Thanksgiving together and being elderly, I won’t have to worry about possibly becoming gravely ill or die. I am a lacto-ovo-pesco-vegetarian so the turkey doesn’t tempt me. I rather like the idea that meat will cost more. Americans eat too much meat… not good for their health.

Turkey is not a necessity.
I’m more concerned about folks who cannot afford — for whatever reason — adequate food and shelter… and not just on “Thanksgiving”.

Breen misses whatever point he’s trying to make … Price of turkey in local stores is less than $1.00/lb (!)

So have a Thanksgiving Lasagna instead. It easier and tastes better.

What this illustrates is, never have the stuffing at the Breen’s.
