Our mail is left in the mailbox at the street. What sets off our son’s Rhodesian Ridgeback is anyone walking down the street or the endless stream of Amazon delivery people. With her bark, they don’t dally at the front door, that’s for sure. If they just knew what a big softie she is….
Our house is on a corner next to the entrance to a subdivision of about 40 homes. The mail carrier always stops his truck across the street for a few minutes to sort the items for the development. Drives our dogs crazy. They believe he’s planning an invasion.
My dog doesn’t even bother to get up for deliveries. She will get up and go verify a pizza has been delivered, but no barking occurs. She will just LOOK at the pizza. She used to pick her head up when a non-food item was delivered, but she finally said, “nah.” I laughed when someone who was coming over said he didn’t want to knock on the door and make my dog bark. I said knock all you want. She didn’t bark, just ran to see who was here. She really likes the mail people, Amazon deliverers, UPS trucks, etc. Garbage trucks are a little loud, but she hangs tough even when they drive right past us walking outside. I have heard that some dogs think “intruders” are going to steal their stuff.
We had an old car that we kept around “just in case” we needed it. Our dogs had ridden in it countless times. One day we moved it from by the driveway over to the field right next to the house. Our silly dogs barked at it like they’d never seen it before! That went on for about a week before they got used to it.

Barking is a response to an unexpected surprise. Talking to them or calling them by name usually squelches alarm barking.
