I have seen this with cats. I was walking my two cats, when we passed a woman walking a puppy. After rounding the corner, a very territorial cat started hissing and spitting. My two cats went back around the corner, were surprised to see the puppy and starting arching and snarling at him. I was able to call them away after a few seconds. That was one surprised pup.
