The mahogany cabinet was beautiful, although we rarely closed the doors. The 45-rpm changer sat on top, cabled into the TV to use the 12-inch speaker. And if an electron tube blew and you couldn’t tell which it was by looking, you could remove all the tubes, take them down to the corner drugstore do-it-yourself tester, and even buy a replacement. You young-uns don’t know how easy you have it!!

I remember having a black and white set with the tubes when i was growing up in the 1970’s. You had to turn on the tv about 5 minutes before the show you wanted to watch came on to give the tubes a chance to warm up. But don’t try to watch more than about 2 hours or the set would overheat. I think we got a modern black and white tv in about 1980 when my parents started having trouble finding new tubes for the tv. Colour tv? Didn’t get one of those until the mid 1990’s.

My last CRT set must have weighed over 100 lbs. It took two guys to remove it and the part I never understood was it was rounded all around, no handles to carry the thing easily!!! Don’t miss it in the least. Now I can carry one and move it easily to dust.

The good thing with the cabinet was you had a place to display all of your bobbleheads and ceramic thingies.

And when we turned the TV off, we waited to see how long it would take for the little white dot to disappear.

There were special sets designed for the restaurant/bar trade that attached to the wall, usually up high for best visibility.

On the other hand, Popular Science was promising flat screen tvs you could hang on the wall “just around the corner” for at least 20 years before we actually got them.
