Crime is up, because the Republicans allowed Trump to commit multiple crimes under their protection. How do you think the morally challenged are going to react? Trump was far from a role model of decency and honesty.
There are laws against destruction of property — and then there are Laws against Destruction of Democracy. The shark pictured is actually a goldfish from a small fishbowl, released into the wild and since grown to mammoth proportions — much as the MAGA Movement has grown to devour democratic government.
My city formed a new group for the cops. It consists of TRAINED mental health workers for domestic disputes. Ramirez doesn’t even care that cops get injured and killed when they try to resolve them. Then again he probably doesn’t care about the Capitol Police getting a beat down by his 1/6 heroes.
Crime and the CRT will absolutely be the Q-Party’s platform going into 2022. Democrats need to get in front of this or face losing the House and Senate.
Wow, the comments above border on self induced insanity. Meanwhile San Francisco is dying. NYC may have a chance to come back with the new Mayor to be. We will see.
If police didn’t go around behaving like mobsters, then there wouldn’t be any calls to defund them. Do you think ignoring the crimes committed by the police would lead to safer society?
DC insider explains how the GOP ‘has descended into opportunistic treachery’
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy responded to the new CDC recommendation with the kind of unhinged hyperbole Trumpers have perfected. “The threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state,” he said.
Republican politicizing of public health will get worse if the Delta variant continues to surge. At some point vaccines will have to be mandated because being inoculated is not solely a matter of personal choice. Herd immunity is a common good. If infections mount, that common good can only be achieved if nearly everyone is vaccinated.
But those eager to exploit the virus’s resurgence – the know-nothings, Trump wannabe’s, vilely ambitious political upstarts, Tucker Carlsons and similarly cynical entertainers – are already howling about “personal freedom” threatened by “socialism.”
The investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6 is further evidence of how far the Republican Party has descended into opportunistic treachery.
We need to know what happened and why if we are to have half a chance of avoiding a repeat. Just as with the history of systemic discrimination and brutality against Black people in America – which Republicans are calling “critical race theory” and trying to ban from classrooms – the truth shapes our responses to the future.
Here again, the dispiriting aspect of the present moment is Republican denial and obfuscation.
As Officer Michael Fanone – who suffered traumatic brain injury on Jan 6 when rioters attacked him – testified yesterday at the start of the hearings, “What makes the struggle harder and more painful is to know so many of my fellow citizens — including so many of the people I put my life at risk to defend — are downplaying or outright denying what happened.”
My niece was out to “defund the police.” I agree with her assessment of police brutality. She told me that you need two years to get an Associate degree, but you only need six months to become a cop. I asked how she planned to fund an extra 18 months of education for the force. She’s no longer trying to defund the police. Reform the police, yes. Educate the police, yes.
The idea that crime is rising and the criminals are running amok because of liberal policies is a right wing trots out whenever the left has some power. The narrative is that the left coddles criminals. However any dive into crime statistics will show that is far from true.
Look at any crime database (not what the media tells you) and you will see that crime in general has fallen, and continues to with the exception of violent crime, particularly, homicide. And any conversation about violent crime leads to easy access to guns, and we know how that ends.
The right has no trouble stepping on YOUR rights, but don’t step on theirs.
“Catch and release” refers to immigration specifically. This began under the Bush (younger) administration as a way of coping with the overwhelmed immigration courts. Illegals released into the US were expected to return for their court date, and if they missed that date, they would be subject to immediate deportation if caught again. If we extend that by analogy to criminal justice, we have had that policy since the founding of the nation: it’s called bail. I realize the “tough on crime” nonsense lobbied for by the private prison industry doesn’t like it, since it would rather incarcerate people indefinitely, but the founders of this nation felt it was essential.
Four officers who defended the Capital have died of suicide since the insurrection. How about some cartoons about the Republicans’ lack of support for these police heroes?
OK, try this on for size. Law enforcement has a great deal of work to do weeding out bullies, racists and learning how to deal with the mentally ill. However, more money needs to go into education, job creation, fair housing, treatment for drug addiction, and mental illness. Florida was 48th in spending for the mentally ill when I moved here. We are now 50th.
This supposed “Crime Wave” is nothing but a concocted fake news story from Fox News, Tucker and his minions. That’s what I’ve been told by the Fine People here in the funny pages.
POC’s across America realized after following Trumps antics for 4 years that mugging & beating Old People up in the streets is nothing compared to Trump. What’s the big deal I mean January 6th RIGHT !!!! This crime wave is going to destroy Dems in the mid-terms, people feeling unsafe in their homes will have an effect. The last time this happened Joe & Commala started locking people up in the 90’s. Go buy a Uzi and hunker down Democrats it’s going to get bumpy.
You have the right not to be killed Murder Is a crime! Unless it was done By a policeman or an aristocrat Know your rights 961 people have been shot and killed by police in the past year https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/investigations/police-shootings-database/
To most civilized countries, the USA is seen as the wild wild west with gun toting hoodlums on every corner. It wasn’t always like this.
There has always been crime but now we seem to have a mass shooting every week. Places like Chicago seem more like a 3rd world war zone than anything else.
I don’t know what drives this, but we definitely need fewer violence prone people with fewer guns on the streets. What we don’t need is more laws, more police, more tough on crime politicians and certainly not more prisons.
The US has more people in prison than any other country except China. Only cuz China has a billion more people, and I hear gulags are still a thing.
What we have been doing since 1980 is simply not working.
We need a better solution than more cops and prisons. Laws do not deter crime, they just legalize the punishment, and by definition criminals do not obey laws.
So we need fewer criminals. How to do that? I really don’t know, but more jobs, better pay, a real education might be a good start.
For example, a guy with a decent job and money in his pocket is not likely to rob a liquor store for a 12 pack of beer and a carton of smokes. (I have seen this particular crime happen).
No one is talking about taking funds away like that. “Defund the police” was an unfortunate malaprop. Instead, the effort is on (a) reforming policing and (b) funding and using other, non-police resources to handle nonviolent civil disputes and disturbances.

Because the “highly militarized, shoot first ask questions later” police force has been SO effective at dealing with crime so far?

No need to defund police, just make them responsible for their actions. Do away with immaculate immunity.

The roving gangs in the inner cities love the democrats and would vote for them if they weren’t all convicted felons.
Though in blue states being a convicted felon is something that will be overlooked.
